Update - July 2'nd
It’s been a long time since we last met in March! It has now been confirmed that the structural repair work will start on 14th July.
Phase 1
A new programme is being prepared, but the sheet piling and stabilisation work will probably run through until March next year, as it is tide dependent.
The principles of the work have not changed. Access for the works will be from the Welcome Slip and drilling for the cintec anchors will be from scaffolding erected on the outside of the pier.
The work will be carried out by Brenwal Ltd. Their site manager will be Steve Howorth, who can be contacted on his mobile 07797 799654 if you have any day-to-day questions. If Steve Howorth is not available for any reason, then Colin Falgate, the managing director, can be contacted at Brenwal’s office on 726576.
Steve Howorth will let you know when scaffolding and high level drilling will take place and will ensure that disruption is minimised.
Phase 2
Phase 2 is the work on top of the pier - the concrete deck and associated works, including any alterations to existing buildings and facilities. If any Boat Owners or interested parties have any views on this please let the Committee know. We can then put together some plans of proposals that will lead first to a planning application and potentially on to some work over the winter 2015-16.
As soon as I have the updated programme I will send this to you.
Kind Regards

Brochure outlining the proposed repair works to Gorey Pier
Notes on briefing by Antony Gibb held on 25/2/2014 re: Works to Gorey Pier
Phase 1
At the project meeting on 26/3/14 the contractor - Geomarine - confirmed they will be starting the sheet piling this Saturday, 29th March. They will be working with the tides, using the springs to carry out work, so will be on site more or less every other week between now and August.
They are aware of the need to accommodate
I have also mentioned Gorey Regatta (21st June), Gorey Fete and the Gorey-Carteret rowing race.
Access for sheet piling will be from the slip by Gorey Village, and drilling for the cintec anchors (through the stones of the walls of the pier) will take place from scaffolding erected on the outside of the pier. There may be the need at some point for some access to take place from the pier itself, but this will not be for several months and arrangements will be made by Geomarine’s project manager, Darren Sowney, to minimise disruption when and if that happens.
Darren Sowney’s mobile number is 07700 714119 if any of you would like to contact him.
Iain Barclay is in charge of the project for Geomarine - his mobile is 07797 716652 - and the Geomarine office number is 856566.
Phase 2
Phase 2 - which is the concrete deck and associated work on top of the pier (railings, lighting, work to buildings, etc.) - will take place once the foundations and walls have been stabilised. We discussed the obvious complications with the current proposal to run a 300mm (1ft) thick concrete deck across the whole pier end and agreed that thought needs to be given to how best to manage this, either keeping the existing buildings (with issues about head height, etc.), refurbishing them, or even removing and replacing some of them.
To help the design process needed in this regards, I asked if you could all put together a wish list of what you thought could happen - you suggested that this would be by the end of April.
Some the issues mentioned on Tuesday were:
Lots of talking will be needed, so the sooner that gets underway, the better.
Kind Regards

- Ferries
- Visiting yachts
- Commercial fishermen
- Businesses operating at the end of the pier
- Boat owners & users
- The public.

Some the issues mentioned on Tuesday were:
- Provision of additional separate fishermen’s pontoon.
- Provision of separate fishermen’s crane.
- Provision of disabled WC and better showers.
- Provision of larger electric supply cable.
- Lighting on jetty not working.
- Ensuring all uses have adequate space.
- Does Customs need such a large space?
- Use of some of the barraques (2 of the 4) by those no longer commercially fishing - convenient but not a fair arrangement.
- Provision of adequate space for commercial fishermen’s gear.
- Possible use of customs hall roof as viewing platform.
Lots of talking will be needed, so the sooner that gets underway, the better.
